The Phantom of the Opera is a 1925 American Universal silent horror thriller film directed by the late Rupert Julian, produced by the late Carl Laemmle and starring the late Lon Chaney, the late Norman Kerry, the late Gibson Gowland, the late Arthur Carewe, the late Mary Philbin, and the late Snitz Edwards. The film is based on the novel of the same name written by Gaston Leroux, and five remakes and two musicals were later released.
In the basement of the Paris Opera lives hidden the mysterious Erik (Lon Chaney), the man with the voice of an angel and the disfigured face of a demon, who lurks between wall and wall the beautiful soprano Christine Daeé (Mary Philbin), whom he wants to catapult to the peak of fame; but when he learns that the singer is engaged to the handsome Viscount Raoul (Norman Kerry), he goes mad with jealousy.
