- Ungoliant - Eaten himself of a hunger.
- Beren Erchamion - Died of old age.
- Luthien Tinuviel - Died of old age.
- Turgon - Killed during the Fall of Gondolin.
- Melkor/Morgoth Bauglir - Executed on Valar's orders.
- Durin I - Died of old age.
- Oropher - Killed during the Battle of Dagorlad.
- Gil-Galad - Presumably killed by Sauron, as in the book. (Although his actual death is seen in a deleted scene of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, which is not truly canon)
- Elendil - Slammed against a rock by Sauron with his mace. (Seen in the prologue of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring)
- Isildur - Shot by Orcs when the Ring slipped off of his finger while he tried to swim away from the Orcs. (Seen in the prologue of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring)
- King of the Mountains - Died of old age. Returned as King of the Dead.
- Witch-King of Angmar - Killed during the Battle of Fornost. Returned as a Ringwraith. (Grave seen in the Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug)
- Durin VI - Killed by Durin's Bane.
- Deagol - Strangled by Smeagol for the Ring. (Seen in the prologue of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King)
- Eorl the Young - Killed during the Battle of Wald.

- Golfimbul - Beheaded by Bandobras Took with a club.
- Girion - Killed when Smaug burned the tower he was standing on. (Seen in the prologue of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey)
- King Thror - Decapitated by Azog, who then threw his head at Thorin's feet. (Seen in a flashback in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey)
- Fundin - Killed during the Battle of Azanulbizar.
- Bandobras Took/Bullroarer - Died of old age.

- Smaug - Shot in the heart by Bard with the black arrow.
- Master of Lake-Town - Crushed when Smaug's body fell on top of him while he was trying to escape with all of Lake-Town's riches.
- Braga - Crushed when Smaug's body fell on top of him.
- Keeper of the Dungeons - Destroyed by Galadriel with a blast of magic.
- Alfrid Lickspittle - While hiding on a catapult, a coin fell off him onto the catapult's trigger, sending him flying into the mouth of a Troll, which in turn choked to death. (Extended Edition)
- Fili - Stabbed by Azog and thrown over a cliff.
- Kili - Stabbed by Bolg.
- Bolg - Stabbed in the head by Legolas.
- Azog the Defiler - Stabbed in the chest by Thorin.
- King Thorin II Oakenshield - Mortally wounded by Azog.

- Unidentified Bounder (Ian Mune) - Slashed by a Ringwraith.
- Harry Goatleaf - Crushed when a Ringwraith's horse kicked the gate down on him.
- Watcher in the Water - Killed in the cave collapse. (Debatable)
- Durin's Bane - Stabbed by Gandalf, causing it to fall off a cliff. (Seen in a flashback in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers)
- Gandalf the Grey - Passed away after defeating Durin's Bane. He was later resurrected as Gandalf the White. (Seen in a flashback in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers)
- Lurtz - Decapitated by Aragorn after he cut his arm off and stabbed him in the chest.
- Boromir - Died of his wounds after being shot in the chest three times by Lurtz while defending Merry and Pippin.
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
- Snaga - Decapitated by Ugluk when he tried to kill Merry and Pippin.
- Mauhúr - Killed by Eomer's horsemen.
- Uglúk - Killed off-screen by Eomer, head seen.
- Grishnack - Stomped by Treebeard.
- Theodred - Fatally wounded by Vrasku`s shot during the First Battle of the Fords of Isen.
- Hama - Mauled by a Warg.
- Sharku - Stabbed in the chest by Aragorn and got trampled by his Warg.
- Haldir - Slashed to death by Uruk-Hai.
- Vrasku - Shot by the Rohan Archers.
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
- Grima Wormtongue - Shot in the heart by Legolas in a vain attempt to prevent him from killing Saruman. (Extended Edition)
- Saruman the White - Stabbed twice in the back by Grima Wormtongue, causing him to fall off of Orthanc and was impaled on a spike below. (Extended Edition)
- Madril - Stabbed by Gothmog.
- Delgamar - Killed off-screen by Army of the Dead. (Extended Edition)
- Dalamyr - Killed off-screen by Army of the Dead. (Extended Edition)
- Denethor II - Tried to burn himself and his son Faramir on a funeral pyre when the gates were broken by Grond and the Witch-King, believing all hope to be lost. However, Pippin rescued Faramir from the pyre and Denethor, not wanting to be separated from his son, attempted to escape the pyre. He was then kicked back into the flames by Shadowfax, and ran out screaming and flaming off of the wall of Minas Tirith.
- Grimbold - Killed off-screen by Fellbeast during the Battle of Pelennor Fields, body seen.
- Guritz - Killed by the Army of the Dead.
- Witch-King of Angmar - Stabbed in the leg by Merry, and in the face by Eowyn. Shared Kill.
- Gothmog - Dismembered by Aragorn, struck in the chest by Gimli, and stabbed in the back by Aragorn. Shared Kill. (Extended Edition)
- Murgash - Decapitated by Aragorn.
- King Theoden - While rallying his soldiers in the Battle of Pelennor, his horse was grabbed by the Fellbeast and thrown, crushing him under its body.
- King of the Dead - Disappeared forever after Aragorn released him and the Army of the Dead.
- Gorbag - Stabbed in the back by Sam.
- King Brand - Killed off-screen by Easterlings during the Battle of Dale.
- King Dain II Ironfoot - Killed off-screen by Easterlings during the Battle of Dale.
- Mouth of Sauron - Decapitated by Aragorn. (Extended Edition)
- Sméagol/Gollum - After biting off Frodo's finger and obtaining the ring, he fell into the Cracks of Doom, and his body was most likely melted.
- Sauron - After the destruction of the Ring, his tower and the foundations of Mordor collapsed, ending not only him but also the Orcs at the Battle of the Black Gate.
- Khamul the Easterling - Vaporized along with the other Nazgul after the end of Sauron.
- Dark Headsman - Vaporized along with the other Nazgul after the end of Sauron.
- Forsaken - Vaporized along with the other Nazgul after the end of Sauron.
- Lingering Shadow - Vaporized along with the other Nazgul after the end of Sauron.
- Abyssal Knight - Vaporized along with the other Nazgul after the end of Sauron.
- Slayer of Men - Vaporized along with the other Nazgul after the end of Sauron.
- Shagrat - Presumably either died slowly when the Ring was destroyed, or else was killed in the battle at the Black Gate, or by Sauron when he brought him Frodo's mithril coat as a punishment for causing chaos in Cirith Ungol.
After the films
- King Aragorn II Elessar - Died of old age. (Seen in a vision in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers)
