—Official tagline

THX 1138 is a satirical/social sci-fi film released in 1971.

In the film, the world has fallen under a dystopian society where intercourse is illegal and mandatory drugs are given to citizens. A robot constructor decides not to take his medication under the suggestion of his roommate, causing him to feel lust for the first time and for the police to eventually notice and punish him. The film was directed by George Lucas and stars Robert Duvall, Donald Pleasence, Maggie McOmie and Don Pedro Colley.

It was the feature directorial debut of George Lucas and was a remake of his 1967 short film Electronic Labyrinth: THX 1138 4EB. The film was financed by Francis Ford Coppola and was the second film to be made by American Zoetrope, a company founded by Lucas and Coppola. The film was a box office bomb upon release and three cuts of the film exists; the theatrical cut which cut out a lot of footage from the film, a 1977 cut released after the success of Star Wars which restored these cuts, and 2004 special edition which added CGI effects.

Notes[]

  • It is mentioned in the beginning that two sectors compete over who has a lesser casualty. It is mentioned that the other sector (Red Sector L14) had a total casualty of 242 loses that week, with 63 of the loses being seen on screen in the beginning of the film, while the sector that we follow had a total casualty of 195 loses. By doing the math, this means that 374 total personnel were confirmed to have died that week, so they will be added prior to the film with the remaining 63 loses being counted during the film.
    • The full scale of the loses from weeks prior are impossible to count.
  • It is ultimately unknown what happens to SEN and NCH after they were captured, though judging by how LUH was terminated after being arrested, it is to be assumed they also met the same fate.
  • It is unknown if THX killed the shell dweller at the end, though judging by the way other shell dwellers huddled around the one that THX beat up, it is to be assumed that it could have died.
