
Shaft is a 1971 American blaxploitation crime action thriller film directed by the late Gordon Parks and written by the late Ernest Tidyman and the late John D. F. Black. It is an adaptation of Tidyman's novel of the same name and is the first entry in the Shaft film series. The film stars the late Richard Roundtree as Shaft, alongside the late Moses Gunn, Charles Cioffi, Christopher St. John and Lawrence Pressman. It was followed by Shaft's Big Score! in 1972.
John Shaft (Ricahard Roundtree) is the ultimate in suave Black detectives. He first finds himself up against Bumpy (Moses Gunn), the leader of the Black crime mob, then against Black nationals, and finally working with both against the White Mafia who are trying to blackmail Bumpy by kidnapping his daughter.
