Death[]
- Once Isildur cuts the fingers off of Sauron's right hand, including the one wearing the ring, the latter’s absence causes his body to explode. (Flashback Shown in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring and in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King)
- After the destruction of the Ring, his tower and the foundations of Mordor collapsed, ending not only him but also the Orcs at the Battle of the Black Gate. (The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King)
Notes[]
- In the books, Sauron still has a physical form after loosing the ring to Isildur, lacking only the finger the ring had been on (as described by Gollum). In The first film however, Saruman tells Gandalf that Sauron can’t yet take physical form, indicating Sauron is bodiless without the ring in the films. As such, his first defeat is also listed here as a death.
- However, Sauron would have initially become physical again and dueled Aragorn at the Black Gate in The Third film. Had this been the case, Sauron would have a “later revived” after his first death. However, according to filmmakers and fans alike, the scene then wouldn’t have had as deep a meaning and could have possibly condemned the film.
