Little Hans is the main character in a short story "The Devoted Friend" from the collection The Happy Prince and Other Tales. In the story he gets exploited and overworked by Hugh. Their supposed friendship ends with Hans dying while helping Hugh because Hugh refused to give him a lantern in a dark and stormy night.
