Father Merrin (Stellan Skarsgård) is haunted by his experiences in World War II when Nazi troops force him to commit atrocities. In the aftermath, he renounces his faith and begins to work as an archaeologist. He travels to Kenya, where a fifth-century Byzantine church holds ancient relics, and meets Sarah (Izabella Scorupco), a doctor and concentration camp survivor. The strange occurrences that follow one another reunite him with the evil (Rupert Degas) from which he tried to escape.
