El Infierno

El Infierno (Hell) is a 2010 black comedy neo-western film written, produced, and directed by Luis Estrada, starring Damián Alcázar, Joaquín Cosío, Ernesto Gómez Cruz, María Rojo, Elizabeth Cervantes, and Daniel Giménez Cacho. The film portrays the issue of organized crime in Mexico, offering a critical perspective on the government of Felipe Calderón Hinojosa, who was in office during its release, and highlighting the social conditions resulting from the War on Drugs during his administration.

The story follows Benjamin "Benny" Garcia (Damian Alcazar), a deported migrant from the U.S. who returns to his hometown, only to find it mired in misery and dominated by organized crime; with no job opportunities, he gets involved in drug trafficking thanks to his friend "El Cochiloco" (Joaquin Cosio) and soon enjoys the money, power and women, but also witnesses the brutality and betrayals within the cartel; when the violence escalates and the betrayals catch up with him, Benny understands that drug trafficking offers no real way out and that everyone ends up dead or trapped in an endless cycle.
