Pieces of media whose copyright has expired and permission from the original creator to create an original version of the media is not needed at all.
All media made before the year 1930 is considered public domain, and will extend one year every year on New Year's Day. Media made between 1930 and 1977 are entered into the public domain on the first of January 95 years after their release, and any media made after 1977 is entered into the public domain 70 years after the creator's death. All media created by the United States government is automatically public domain.
