Altered States is a psychedelic/body horror/sci-fi film released in 1980.
In the film, a scientist experimenting with the human consciousness tests out a ceremonial potion he obtained from Mexico. After bizarre visions of religion and science, he and his colleagues find out that he is slowly de-evolving. The film was directed by Ken Russell and stars William Hurt, Blair Brown, and Bob Balaban. It is based off of Paddy Chayefsky's 1978 novel of the same name.
