2001: A Space Odyssey is an epic, psychedelic, space film released in 1968. It was directed by Stanley Kubrick and stars Keir Dullea, Gary Lockwood, and William Sylvester. It is loosely based off of the short stories of Arthur C. Clarke, particularly the stories The Sentinel written in 1951 and Encounter in the Dawn written in 1953. Clarke would also serve as a co-writer for the film and would later write the novelization. It is the first film in the Space Odyssey series, followed by 2010: The Year We Make Contact in 1984.
In the film, a small group of scientist are sent to Jupiter in order to investigate a signal produced by a monolith that was discovered on the moon. However, the expedition quickly goes awry after the super computer controlling the ship begins to fear human control.
